International student group activities

We offer a unique KIWI experience for international students, Kiwis are well knows for there love of the water and known internationally for there yacht design and competitiveness. We offer a two hour sailing experience, the difference is the students sail the yacht now our crew! Typically we take 5 students at a time, they all have a job to do as crew and if the team doesn't work together then the yacht wont move

We have two certified skippers who have extensive experience with overseas students and are sensitive to cultural issues and language barriers

We train the students as we go, a qualified experienced skipper monitors every move! All students get a go at the following tasks:
  • Raise the Jib and Mainsail (over 40ft high)
  • Steer the yacht (helmsman)
  • Adjust the jib using the winches and keep Starboard lookout (Jib trimmers)
  • Adjust the jib cars, use telltales Port lookout (Jib trimmers)
  • Operate the engine (diesel inboard engine)
  • Adjust the mainsail, this varies the lean of the yacht (main-sheet trimmer)
  • Use the compass, charts and VHF radio
  • Work out the best sail shape and position to get maximum speed
Our training yacht conforms to the ‘Safe Ship Management’ safety system registered No. MNZ 133171. All instructors hold a commercial skippers licence and are first aid qualified and have many years experience. For students below 14 years of age we require an additional adult on the vessel
Example day out timetable for 10 students:

10.00 am - First 5 students arrive - introductions & English language test
10.10 am - Safety briefing, life jackets, Man Overboard drill, fire, use of radio & flares
10.15 am - Student & yacht familiarisation, parts of the boat & their names, prepare sails
10.30 am - Out on the water, as soon as we are clear of the jetty we hoist the sails
10.30 - 11.00 - Tacking the yacht, all students to perform a tack of the yacht
11.00 - 11.30 - Gybing the yacht & beam reach
11.30 - 12.00 - Running (both sails fully out) sail back to the jetty.
12.00 - 2.00pm - Next 5 students as above

Testimonials:

Jan 2011
Learn to sail continues to be a fabulous experience for the
international students we send out!  Dudley goes out of his way to make
the students feel comfortable, confident and safe on the sea. He has
opened their eyes to a whole new NZ experience.  Thanks for sharing your
passion with us Dudley, see you soon!  Erin and the Students of CCEL

We take our students sailing with Learn2Sail as a team building exercise. It gives them a break from studying and is a great opportunity for them to experience something new, work as a team to sail the yacht, and see Lyttleton harbour from a different viewpoint. Our students really enjoy it, if you are looking for a way to give students a new experience, with team building and sightseeing included then this is a great way to do it. Trevor Mitchell.
